Through Newman’s outreach programs, students can serve the community in various ways including serving at “People’s Kitchen” of the San Luis Obispo Prado Day Center and at the Overnight Homeless Shelter. We serve at People’s Kitchen every second Sunday of the month. We meet at Newman at 9:30 am to cook and prepare a lunch, and then serve it at the Prado Day Center at noon.
Special projects and collections for the needy also take place throughout the academic year, especially during Lent.
Newman also sponsors a number of Mission Trips throughout the academic year. Last year, students traveled to San Francisco to help feed homeless and hungry in the Tenderloin District and also to New Orleans, Louisiana to help with Katrina Relief at Musician’s Village. These trips give students an opportunity to combine faith and service along with learning about different people’s every day struggles.
